Google’s Redesigned App Icons Begin Rolling Out as Workspace Gets a More Distinct Look

Google is rolling out new app icons for its Workspace apps and services, giving Gmail, Drive, Meet, Calendar, and other tools a more recognizable look after years of feedback that the old icons were too similar.

According to Engadget’s Nathan Ingraham, Google last redesigned many of its app icons about five years ago, but people online didn’t like the change because it replaced unique features with outlines in Google’s four main colors. The new icons, which leaked late last month, are now appearing for users.

A clearer look for everyday apps

The main problem with Google’s old icons was that they were hard to tell apart.

Engadget explained that users could spot the document outline for Google Docs or the camera for Google Meet if they looked closely, but the icons were much harder to tell apart quickly.

With this update, Google is trying to solve that by giving each app a stronger shape, more depth, and clearer separation, while still using the company’s familiar colors.

Google first hinted at these changes with a new, more noticeable Google Maps icon a few months ago. A wider redesign was then revealed by 9to5Google several weeks before the rollout.

Android Police also pointed out that the new icons leaked late last month before users started seeing them.

Rollout is visible in Gmail and mobile apps

The update isn’t available everywhere yet. The new icons showed up in the app switcher for a personal Gmail account, but Drive and Calendar still had the old icons when opened directly.

Ingraham also mentioned that several Google apps on his iPhone had already updated, which suggests the rollout is expanding beyond a small test.

Because the rollout is happening in stages, users might see both old and new icons for a while. Anyone who hasn’t seen the new icons yet should be patient, since the updates have already appeared on his phone and in several Google accounts.

Design shift arrives before Google I/O

The timing stands out because the new icons are showing up right before Google I/O. The rollout started just a day before the developer conference, and suggested Google might talk about the redesign during the keynote. The new icons also seem to match Google’s bigger visual update. They are similar to the new 3D emoji from Android 17.

Small change, big usability impact

App icons might seem less important than big AI news, Android updates, or major product launches, but they affect how people use Google’s apps every day.

The old Workspace icons got a lot of criticism for making the apps look too similar. The new designs help users find Google’s tools faster, which is especially helpful for anyone switching between Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet, Docs, Sheets, and Slides during the day.

For Google, this update is a small but clear sign that keeping everything on-brand can be a problem if it makes apps harder to use.

The new icons still look like Google, but they seem made to help people tell the apps apart more quickly, which was a problem with the last set.
