X has relaunched its Android app after a nearly year-long rebuild, giving the Elon Musk-owned social network a redesigned foundation aimed at improving speed, reliability and future feature development on the world’s most widely used mobile operating system.
X Says the Android App Was Rebuilt From Scratch
The company is presenting the release as more than a routine app update.
TechCrunch reported that the new Android version of X was built from scratch and promises improvements to loading, scrolling, notifications and overall reliability.
X’s engineering team said the new app was rebuilt “from the ground up.” X’s Engineering account described the app as faster, smoother and more reliable than the old version, with a modernized foundation that should improve scrolling, loading and notifications.
Nikita Bier Calls It a Major Engineering Project
The rebuild had been publicly signaled last year by X’s product leadership. X head of product Nikita Bier said last August that the company was putting together an Android “dream team” to reshape the app experience.
Bier described the project as unusually large for the company. Bier called the Android rebuild “one of the largest engineering projects” in X’s history and said the new app was built from scratch rather than simply updated. The rebuilt app uses a clean Kotlin and Jetpack Compose stack, while Grok said the rewrite was a “human engineering feat” by the X team.
Android Matters for X’s Global Growth
The Android rebuild could be important for X’s international strategy.
Ground News reported the app is now available globally, making the Android relaunch relevant beyond the U.S. user base.
The update also comes after Android performance problems had become visible. Android issues were so bad at one point last year that the X app could not even load X posts when users clicked links. Improving Android reliability therefore matters not only for user experience, but also for X’s ability to retain users who access the platform through links, notifications and shared posts.
Faster App Could Support X’s Broader Feature Expansion
The technical rebuild also supports X’s wider effort to expand beyond short posts. Bier said the new Android app will enable X to build new features at “lightning speed”. X has recently rolled out new features such as X Money and X Chat, both of which were given their own standalone apps.
Still, the release is not fully complete. Bier warned there are still rough edges, including performance improvements for older Android devices and support for Spaces, X’s live audio feature. A new video editor, react-with-video feature, cashtags and custom timelines are still coming soon to Android.
The relaunch shows that X is trying to fix one of its most important product foundations before pushing deeper into payments, messaging, video and creator tools. For Android users, the app should feel faster and smoother now. For X, the bigger goal is turning a neglected mobile app into a platform that can support the company’s larger ambitions.
