Google has signed a major renewable energy deal to power its expanding data centers with solar energy. The 1-gigawatt agreement is linked to new projects in Texas, as the need for computing power keeps increasing.
Solar power deal to support data-center growth
Interesting Engineering says that the deal will provide 1 gigawatt (GW) of solar power for Google’s growing data centers in Texas. The electricity will come from two projects now being developed: the 805-megawatt Wichita solar farm and the 195-MW Mustang Creek site. Construction is set to start in the second quarter of 2026.
These long-term power purchase agreements will provide about 28 terawatt-hours of renewable electricity over 15 years. It is the largest renewable deal that TotalEnergies has signed in the United States.
Meeting rising electricity demand from data centers
This deal comes as large data centers need more power. Electrek reported that the contracts are for new generation capacity, not existing supply. The new solar projects will add electricity to regional grids to help Google’s infrastructure grow.
Google’s clean-energy leaders said adding new electricity sources is important as the company grows its digital infrastructure. They also said these projects will make the region’s power supply more reliable and affordable.
This agreement is part of a larger trend in the tech industry, where companies are securing their own energy sources to power AI and cloud operations. These services need a lot of steady electricity.
Part of a broader clean-energy strategy
TotalEnergies will own the solar facilities, which are being built just for this agreement. The Wichita and Mustang Creek projects will produce a large amount of renewable energy once finished. Company disclosures say the construction will also create jobs and bring in tax revenue.
Google has also made other deals for more renewable energy to support its facilities in different U.S. power markets. This further grows the company’s clean-energy supply.
Energy becomes a central issue for digital infrastructure
This deal shows that electricity supply is now a major factor in data-center growth. As AI and cloud services expand, tech companies are signing more long-term contracts to secure power and meet their sustainability goals.
By making direct deals for new renewable energy, Google hopes to add capacity to the grid and support its long-term infrastructure needs. This shows the growing connection between energy planning and digital growth.
