Google has announced plans to bring its Gemini AI assistant directly into the Chrome browser, marking a major leap forward in browser intelligence and user productivity. The integration will begin rolling out in the coming weeks, with more advanced capabilities scheduled for later this year under the internal codename Project Mariner.

Gemini AI Coming to Chrome’s Address Bar

Soon, Chrome users will see a new AI mode embedded in the address bar, allowing them to switch between traditional search and AI-assisted interaction using a dedicated icon. Unlike keyword-based queries, users will be able to type full questions or prompts, and Gemini will respond with contextual insights and actions.

What Gemini Will Be Able to Do in Chrome

The AI assistant will have access to:

  • Open tabs and browsing history
  • Google services data, including Gmail, Calendar, and Maps
  • Real-time content summaries of web pages
  • Multi-tab interactions, such as comparing results or compiling data
  • Task automation, like scheduling meetings or finding YouTube content

Notably, paywalls and usage restrictions on Gemini within Chrome will be lifted, expanding access to advanced features for all users.

Project Mariner: AI That Works Across the Web for You

Later this year, Google will launch Project Mariner, a more advanced version of the AI agent that can autonomously handle complex tasks across the web. The initiative is designed to position Chrome as more than just a browser — it becomes a personal AI-powered assistant that simplifies navigation, automates workflows, and surfaces relevant information proactively.

“We are evolving the browser to help you get the most from the web — in ways we didn’t think possible even a few years ago,” said Rick Osterloh, Google’s SVP of Platforms and Devices. “And we are doing it while keeping the speed, simplicity, and safety of Chrome that so many people love.”

Deeper Integration with Google Services

Gemini’s upcoming integration will extend to other Google products, allowing users to:

  • Interact with Calendar directly in Chrome without switching tabs
  • Watch or retrieve YouTube content in context
  • Use Google Maps features like directions or local suggestions via AI
