OpenAI has started testing advertisements inside ChatGPT, marking the first time sponsored content is being introduced into the chatbot as the company explores new ways to support free access to its AI tools.

Ad tests roll out to select users

OpenAI has begun showing ads to some users on ChatGPT’s free tier and its lower-cost “Go” subscription, with early testing focused in the United States. Engadget reported that users on these plans may now start seeing ads as the company rolls out the experiment.

Mashable’s coverage similarly noted that the company has begun trialing advertising within the chatbot experience, signaling a shift toward new revenue models as usage grows and operating costs increase.

Company outlines how ads will appear

In a blog post, OpenAI said it plans to test ads at the bottom of responses when a relevant sponsored product or service is available. The company stressed that ads will be clearly labeled and separated from the main answer.

The post also stated that the initial tests will target logged-in adult users on free and Go tiers in the U.S., while paid plans such as Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise will remain ad-free.

Safeguards and positioning

OpenAI emphasized in its announcement that advertising will not influence the chatbot’s responses and that user conversations will not be sold to advertisers. The company said the goal of testing ads is to expand access to AI tools while keeping costs low for users.

The move represents a significant shift for ChatGPT, which until now had largely avoided ads, and could shape how AI platforms balance revenue generation with user trust.

A turning point for AI business models

The ad tests mark one of the clearest signs that generative AI platforms are moving toward mixed revenue strategies combining subscriptions and advertising. Engadget described the rollout as the start of a new phase in how OpenAI monetizes ChatGPT as it scales globally.

With the trial still in its early stages, the company says it will monitor user experience closely before deciding whether to expand the program more broadly.
