OpenAI readies ai-generated video app to rival TikTok

OpenAI is developing a short-form social app powered by its Sora 2 video generator, aiming squarely at TikTok’s format but with a key twist: every clip in the feed is AI-generated, not uploaded by users. Internal testing is already underway and early feedback has been “overwhelmingly positive,” according to reports.

How it works

The app presents a familiar vertical feed with swipe navigation and a “For You”–style recommendation algorithm. Users describe what they want to see; Sora 2 generates vertical videos up to 10 seconds long. Personal photos or phone videos cannot be uploaded—only AI-made clips appear in the stream.

Why it matters

If launched, the product would extend OpenAI from model provider to consumer social platform, competing in AI-first entertainment alongside TikTok and Reels. It also leverages momentum around Sora 2’s broader rollout and growing debate over synthetic media.

Timing and availability

Reports indicate the app is being prepared for public release alongside Sora 2’s expansion, with the interface and core feature set already defined in testing builds. Details like regional availability and monetization have not been finalized.
