Perplexity makes its AI browser Comet free for everyone

Perplexity has officially made its AI-powered browser, Comet, free to all users — removing the paywall that previously limited access to subscribers of its $200/month Max plan.

Originally launched in July 2025, Comet offers a seamless integration with Perplexity’s AI search engine and includes the Comet Assistant, an intelligent agent designed to enhance productivity and streamline web navigation.

What Comet can do

The assistant built into Comet allows users to:

  • answer questions about web pages and video content
  • summarize emails and calendar events
  • manage tabs efficiently
  • navigate websites autonomously on the user’s behalf

Starting today, Comet is available for free download on both Windows and macOS via the official Perplexity website.

What’s still reserved for premium users

While Comet is now free for everyone, Max subscribers will continue to receive benefits such as:

  • Access to higher-performance AI models
  • Early access to experimental features
  • Exclusive tools like the background assistant, which operates discreetly in hidden mode and can run multiple tasks in parallel — all controllable via a dedicated panel

The move to make Comet publicly available positions Perplexity more directly against players like Arc Browser, Microsoft Edge with Copilot, and potential offerings from OpenAI, as AI-first browsers continue to reshape how users interact with the web.
