Google is expanding Gemini’s personalized AI image generation feature to more people in the United States, making a tool that was previously limited to paid subscribers available for free to eligible users.

Google said all eligible users in the U.S. can now experience deeply personalized image generation in Gemini for free. Gemini’s personalized Nano Banana-powered image generation feature was previously available only to Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Gemini Connects Personal Intelligence With Photos

The update builds on Google’s Personal Intelligence system, which uses connected Google apps to tailor Gemini’s responses.

Google said Personal Intelligence can pull from Google tools such as Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Search with a user’s permission.

TechCrunch reported that Gemini uses data from Google account connections, including Gmail, Google Photos, YouTube and Search, to generate images based on a user’s likes and preferences.

The key difference is that users may not have to describe every personal detail in a prompt. Google said users can now type a simple prompt like “design my dream house” instead of writing out intricate details about their life.

TechCrunch gave a similar example, saying a user could ask Gemini to “Create an illustration of me and my favorite things” without listing specific preferences such as coffee or baking.

Google Photos Removes Manual Upload Step

The feature also connects image generation directly to Google Photos. Gemini can pull actual images of a user from Google Photos, so the user no longer needs to manually upload photos when asking for an illustration of themselves. Gemini can pull actual images from Google Photos, removing the need for users to manually upload photos.

That makes Gemini’s image tool more personalized but also more closely tied to a user’s Google account. The feature can create images that reflect personal taste, lifestyle and visual identity, but it also depends on whether users are comfortable connecting their Google apps to Gemini.

Opt-In Controls Remain Central

Google is framing the feature as controlled by the user. Connecting Google apps to Gemini remains an opt-in experience that users can adjust in settings at any time. Personal Intelligence is opt-in and lets users decide which apps Gemini can access.

Once the feature is enabled, it is set as the default for every prompt, but users can disable it through a new toggle in the Tools menu. That control may be important because personalized image generation depends on access to private account context.

A Wider Push for Gemini Adoption

The free U.S. expansion also shows Google’s effort to make Gemini more useful in everyday creative tasks.

The Verge reported that Google first announced in April that AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. would be able to connect Google Photos with Personal Intelligence for AI image generation. Google initially rolled out Personal Intelligence earlier this year, made it widely available to all U.S. users in March and recently expanded it to users in India and Japan.

The rollout comes as Gemini continues to grow. Gemini surpassed 750 million monthly active users earlier this year. Google’s move suggests that personalized AI features are becoming less of a premium add-on and more of a default way the company wants users to experience Gemini.

For users, the update means faster personalized image creation without extra subscription access. For Google, it is another step toward making Gemini feel less like a generic chatbot and more like an assistant that can use personal context across its apps.
