Apple Builds China-Specific AI Model With Alibaba as Apple Intelligence Nears Launch

Apple has developed its own large language model specifically for China, marking a notable shift from its previous strategy of depending primarily on Chinese partners to provide artificial intelligence capabilities for iPhones and other devices sold in the country.

Apple Shifts From Reliance on Third-Party Models

The move gives Apple greater control over how its AI features operate in one of its most important overseas markets.

Reuters said Apple had previously leaned toward using models from domestic Chinese companies because US systems such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude are not available in China.

Reuters reported that Apple Intelligence is expected to launch in China in the coming months following an update to the company’s iOS operating system. Apple and Alibaba did not respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Alibaba’s Qwen Will Still Play a Role

Apple’s proprietary model does not mean the company is abandoning Chinese AI partners.

Alibaba’s Qwen model is expected to be incorporated into Apple Intelligence on compatible iPhone, iPad, Mac and Vision Pro devices sold in China.

Rappler’s report likewise centers Alibaba’s support in Apple’s effort to bring its AI capabilities to Chinese consumers.

Apple Intelligence was also set to incorporate technology from Baidu under the China arrangement. The exact relationship between Apple’s newly trained model, Alibaba’s Qwen and other Chinese technologies remains unclear.

Apple recently offered another glimpse of the partnership. The company published a Chinese-language guide explaining how eligible mainland China Mac users could connect Qwen with Siri and Writing Tools, but later removed the guide without explanation.

Beijing Clears Regulatory Path for Apple Intelligence

China’s strict rules for generative AI have delayed Apple’s rollout relative to other markets.

The Cyberspace Administration of China registered Apple’s generative AI service last month after a lengthy regulatory process, clearing the way for Apple Intelligence to reach Chinese iPhones.

The arrangement could make Apple the first foreign company approved by Beijing to offer a proprietary AI model in China. The strategy also illustrates an unusual collaboration between major US and Chinese technology companies amid wider trade and diplomatic tensions over artificial intelligence.

Apple Needs AI to Regain Momentum in China

China remains commercially critical for Apple, but competition from domestic smartphone manufacturers has intensified.

Rappler emphasizes Apple’s effort to establish a China-specific AI offering with Alibaba’s support as it prepares its local rollout.

The absence of Apple Intelligence on Chinese iPhones had been cited as one factor weighing on sales as consumers increasingly considered domestic devices equipped with AI assistants.

Apple’s China strategy is therefore becoming more complex than simply importing the version of Apple Intelligence available elsewhere. By training its own local model while integrating Alibaba’s Qwen and potentially other Chinese technology, Apple is building a separate AI ecosystem designed around both Beijing’s regulations and the competitive demands of the world’s largest smartphone market.
