Instagram is rolling out a new editing feature called First Draft that automatically assembles and trims video clips for Reels, giving Meta another way to keep creators inside its own production ecosystem instead of sending footage to third-party editing apps.
TechCrunch reports that First Draft can “automatically trims selected video clips and removes pauses”, assembling the strongest moments into an initial edit that creators can modify afterward. Instagram says the process can generate a first version in under 10 seconds, reducing the amount of manual editing required before a Reel is ready for refinement.
Engadget similarly says the feature “automatically trim silences and pauses” after users select footage from their Reels Gallery. The resulting clips are arranged on a timeline where creators can review the sequence, make additional edits or publish the result to their feed or Story.
For Meta, the bigger product question is not whether automated trimming is technically novel. It is whether Instagram can absorb more of the creator-production workflow that currently happens in standalone editing software.
First Draft Targets the Repetitive Part of Video Editing
Instagram designed First Draft around one of the less creative stages of short-form video production: manually identifying useful footage and cutting out dead space.
According to TechCrunch, creators will be able to access the feature either directly from Instagram’s camera or through the Reels gallery after choosing multiple clips. The rollout starts on iPhone, and Instagram has not yet provided an Android launch date.
Engadget explains that users can select their clips, tap First Draft, and allow Instagram to analyze and trim the footage before arranging it into an editable timeline. Meta also plans to let users use First Draft immediately after shooting new footage inside Instagram.
The workflow matters because it moves another production step directly into the distribution platform. Every task Instagram can perform before publishing gives creators one less reason to export footage elsewhere.
Meta Is Competing With Dedicated Editing Apps
Automated video assembly already exists outside Instagram.
TechCrunch points to comparable functionality in Adobe Firefly’s Quick Cuts and CapCut’s Auto Cut, while arguing that Instagram’s advantage comes from building the functionality directly into its own app. That could reduce friction for creators who currently move content between editing and social platforms.
Meta has already taken a more direct approach to this market. Engadget notes that the company launched its standalone Edits video-editing application in April 2025, offering several AI-powered editing features intended to simplify Reel production.
Interestingly, Engadget says Instagram’s First Draft announcement does not mention AI, despite Meta increasingly adding AI-powered capabilities across its social products. That makes First Draft less about showcasing generative AI and more about solving a straightforward workflow problem.
Instagram Is Building More of the Creator Stack
First Draft arrives alongside several other creator-focused experiments.
TechCrunch says Instagram has introduced tools including Replace Audio, which lets users change music on existing posts without deleting and reposting them, while the company is also developing an AI assistant for Edits and testing Series, a feature that lets creators organize related Reels into a specific viewing order.
For creators and product teams, the broader direction is significant. Short-form platforms increasingly compete not only through recommendation algorithms and audience size, but through the software creators use before a post ever reaches the feed.
CapCut demonstrated how powerful that layer can become. Instagram’s response appears to be bringing more editing intelligence closer to publishing itself.
First Draft may look like a small convenience feature, but strategically it helps Meta compress the distance between shooting, editing and distribution—and makes Instagram a little less dependent on the creator tools surrounding it.
