German chemical group BASF has sued Apple in the United States, alleging that newer iPhones and iPads use patented sensing technology developed by its trinamiX unit to strengthen Face ID against spoofing attacks.
Reuters reported that BASF filed the lawsuit on September 3, accusing Apple of infringing patented face-authentication technology across multiple iPhone and iPad models.
The Straits Times similarly reported that the dispute centers on technology designed to close a security weakness in conventional facial recognition systems, where attackers can defeat face-unlock features using photographs, 3D-printed masks and silicone replicas.
trinamiX says Apple infringed seven patents
At the center of the lawsuit is BASF subsidiary trinamiX, which develops 3D and material-sensing technologies.
According to Reuters, the complaint alleges that Apple did not use BASF’s patented technology when it introduced Face ID with the iPhone X in 2017, but later incorporated related material and skin-detection capabilities into iPhone 15, iPhone 16, iPhone 17 and iPad Pro models.
The Straits Times reported that BASF claims Apple knew or should have known that incorporating Face ID with material and skin detection infringed seven trinamiX patents, allegedly causing substantial damages and irreparable injury.
BASF filed the case in the U.S. District Court in Midland, Texas, seeking unspecified damages and an order stopping further infringement.
Decade of sensing research sits behind the dispute
The technology at issue stems from research well outside the smartphone industry.
TrinamiX traces its origins to 2010, when BASF scientists studying organic solar cells made unexpected discoveries that eventually led to early three-dimensional camera prototypes.
BASF subsequently created trinamiX as a standalone entity in 2014 to develop advanced 3D and material-sensing technologies. The company now holds more than 800 granted or pending patents worldwide.
The commercial stakes are significant. Reuters said Apple generated $196.5 billion from iPhone sales and another $21.7 billion from iPads during the nine months ending June 27.
Face authentication IP is becoming a hardware risk
For hardware and product teams, the case highlights how biometric authentication systems depend on far more than software recognition algorithms.
Technologies capable of distinguishing real skin and materials from photographs or artificial replicas can become critical security layers as device makers try to prevent presentation attacks. But integrating those capabilities can also expose companies to patents originating from specialized sensing businesses far outside traditional consumer electronics.
That makes the BASF-Apple dispute relevant beyond Face ID. Mature hardware platforms combine technologies sourced from years of research across optics, sensors, materials and machine vision.
For device makers, securing biometric authentication therefore requires not only stronger anti-spoofing engineering but a clear understanding of the intellectual-property landscape underneath the sensors that make those protections possible.
