Google Maps is moving beyond directions and recommendations by giving its Gemini-powered assistant the ability to help users order meals, compare hotels, find event tickets and manage travel plans without leaving the app.
Ask Maps Can Prepare Food Orders
TechCrunch reported that users can describe a specific meal, dietary need and location, prompting Ask Maps to identify nearby restaurants that offer suitable options.
The Verge provided an example in which a user could request spicy pad kee mao with seafood for pickup while traveling home from work, with Ask Maps searching for open restaurants along the route.
After the user chooses a restaurant, Ask Maps can place the selected items in an online cart, although customers may still add products and complete payment through the supported ordering service.
Square and Toast are supporting the initial rollout, while integration with Uber Eats is expected to follow.
Hotel Search Becomes More Conversational
Google is also allowing users to describe an entire travel situation instead of applying several individual filters.
TechCrunch said a traveler could ask Ask Maps to locate a reasonably priced, highly rated hotel with a particular atmosphere and within walking distance of restaurants and a gym.
The tool can then compare prices and availability before producing a shortlist. TechCrunch reported that users will be directed to a partner’s website to complete the hotel reservation after selecting an option.
Ask Maps can locate local events matching specific preferences and provide links for purchasing tickets to comedy shows, live music and other activities.
PCMag’s coverage emphasized that the combined meal and hotel functions are designed to reduce the number of separate searches travelers perform before or during a trip.
Personal Intelligence Uses Existing Plans
The update also connects Ask Maps more closely with information held across Google’s other services.
TechCrunch reported that Personal Intelligence can tailor responses using details from a person’s Gmail and Google Calendar, including flights, dinner reservations and hotel plans.
The Verge said Gmail is the initial connection and is disabled by default, while support for additional services such as Calendar is expected to follow.
Ask Maps can also retain earlier conversations. Users may return to a previous exchange and ask about activities the assistant had recommended for an earlier trip without rebuilding the plan from the beginning.
Live Transit and Conversational Map Updates Arrive
Google is adding real-time transit information for buses, trains, subways and ferries through a live widget inside Ask Maps.
The publication also said users can update location information conversationally and upload storefront photographs from which Maps can identify details such as revised opening hours before asking for confirmation.
Food ordering, hotel discovery and event-search capabilities are initially rolling out in the United States. Personalized responses and the transit widget are expanding across Ask Maps markets, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan and Mexico.
The changes transform Google Maps from a service that shows where businesses are into an assistant that can help decide, organize and prepare actions around them. The larger test will be whether users trust Gemini to interpret personal plans accurately while still leaving final purchases and bookings under human control.
